About the Garfield Re-2 Community
Garfield Re-2 School District is located 180 miles west of Denver, Colorado along the I-70 corridor and serves the Garfield County communities of Rifle, Silt, and New Castle. Surrounded by fertile agricultural lands, plateaus, and high mountains, the area enjoys a temperate year-round climate. Retail trade, agriculture, natural resource development, services and construction compose the majority of the district’s economic base.
The spectacular natural beauty of the surrounding area makes western Garfield County a haven for outdoor recreation. The 1.9 million acre White River National Forest offers a multitude of year-round recreational opportunities, and Rifle’s own Rifle MountainPark has become a premier location for world class rock climbing. The Bureau of Land Management’s Roan Plateau offers top-notch single and double track mountain biking.
For winter fun, alpine skiing opportunities abound with the world renowned ski resorts of Aspen and Vail just 90 minutes away, and more intimate, family skiing fun available with a mere 45 minute drive to Sunlight Mountain in Glenwood Springs or Powderhorn Mountain near Grand Junction.
The Western Slope of Colorado is also known for its hunting and fishing. You can see trophy elk and the world’s largest mule deer herd thriving in the meadows. World class rainbow trout are often swimming in our gold medal streams.
The growing communities of New Castle, Silt and Rifle provide rural character and a taste of the old west. Traditional amenities are available in all communities with the shopping destination communities of Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction just a short drive away.
Colorado Mountain College, a two-year institution for higher learning, serves local residents and offers a broad range of educational opportunities, including an Associate of Arts Degree. Coursework in computer software applications, recreation and art are also available.
