Budget Feedback Comments now online
Over the past several weeks, community members have been submitting ideas, comments and suggestions on the 2010-11 budget via a web based form under the 2011 budget information tab on the left hand rail of the web site.

We've read and discussed each and every idea.  To keep others apraised on what others are thinking, we've posted those comments, along with Garfield Re-2 responses.  That information is here.

Rifle High School presents Les Miserables: School Edition

Friday, March 19 and Saturday March 20 at 7 p.m.

All performances at the RHS Auditorium.

Tickets are $5 for seniors and students, $10 for adults and $30 for the family pass.

Coal Ridge girls lose in Great 8
Loss  ends an amazing post-season run.

Just as they have the past three times this season, the Olathe Pirates were able to defeat the Coal Ridge Titans.

Morgan Stansberry scored all of her game-best 14 points in the second half to lead undefetaed and No. 3-seeded Olathe (25-0) to to a 40-25 win over No. 27 Coal Ridge (13-12).

Sam Wilson scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebound to lead the Titans.

Olathe will play the winner of No. 2 Holy Family (28-1) and No. 7 Brush (22-2) in Friday night's semifinal.
Colorado State High School Bridge Building Competition Demolishes Bridges
Design and engineering skills were highlighted by Colorado's High School students recently at the 2010 Colorado High School Bridge Building Competition held at the Bureau of Reclamation's laboratory in Lakewood.

Students compete in two regions. Rifle and Coal Ridge students participate in Region 2. - more-

RIFLE — As a senior at Rifle High School this year, Caleb Ziegler needed to think of what he would do for his senior seminar project. He wanted it to be something special — something to help the community. Something to leave a legacy and continue long after he had graduated. - more -
Who's Who in Re-2
For Joe LaGrange, getting a job at Riverside Middle School was a lot like coming home. The Viking health educator and coach had spent many years in different school districts, in a variety of different roles. But when he got the call that he was hired on at Riverside by then principal Chuck Shupe, it just felt right. - more -
Garfield Re-2 receives accreditation information from state
The Garfield Re-2 School District is proud to announce that it received “Accreditation” status from the State of Colorado earlier this month.

Each school district must go through the accreditation process with the Colorado Department of Education each year and the evaluation is based upon the district’s improvement plan. -Read more-

Highland students mimic Chihuly
Highland Elementary 3rd and 4th graders just finished a project inspried by Dale Chihuly. Dale Chihuly is an American artist who blows glass. Some of his work can be found at the bellagio hotel in Vegas and the Fredrick Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, MI. To see photos click here.
Tina Cox - Who's Who in Re-2
The newest feature in the Citizen Telegram is Who's Who in Re-2. Every two weeks there will be a brief profile of a randomly chosen Garfield Re-2 staff member.  It will hopefully tell you a little bit more about the amazing folks who help our students become better readers, writers and mathematicians every day. Cactus Valley Elementary's Tina Cox is the latest to be profiled. Check it out.
Stimulus Funds Support Trip to Nashville

After three long days of intense professional development and collaboration, twenty-two staff members of Garfield Re2 are ready to help their schools be all they can be, SFA style. Staff from Wamsley, Kathryn Senor, Highland, Graham Mesa, Elk Creek, and Cactus Valley Elmentaries as well as Rifle and Riverside Middle Schools recently returned from the Success For All Experienced Users Conference held this year in Nashville, Tennessee. This conference is a yearly event for schools across the country that are implementing the Success For All or Reading Edge reform models. -more-

KSE's Parents Night Out
Kathryn Senor Elementry will be holding a parent's night out and silent auction with the Crystal Palace Comedy Troupe.  The event is  Friday, Feb. 5 from 6 - 8 p.m.  You can call KSE (970) 665-7700 re: tickets or get them at the front door.  $15 per adult, $5 per kids.

Wamsley Realizes Goal
“Congratulations. The deliberate, focused, and concerted effort on the part of your teachers and principal at Wamsley Elementary has paid off.” With these words, John Condie, regional support manager for the Colorado Department of Education, confirmed what the district was hoping to hear. After three years of hard work, intense focus, and extreme dedication, Wamsley Elementary School was officially removed from the state list of Title I schools in need of improvement. - More -

RMS Outdoor Club gets $500 donation

Rifle Middle School teacher Jacob Pascoe and the RMS Outdoor Club received a $500 donation from the Rifle Middle School PTA to support the club. PTA Vice President Julie Bjurstrom made the check presentation. Pascoe and fellow teachers Molly Peterson and August Heckenbach started the club to provide supervised, outdoor recreational opportunities for Rifle Middle School students. The club has taken trips to Rifle Falls, and is planning a trip to Hubbard Mesa. The club has turned many of the participants into budding nature photographers.

Garfield Re-2 Budget Update
Thank you to everyone that has given their input in regards to 2010-11 budget reductions and how to maintain employee morale throughout these challenging financial times.  Every budget reduction idea has been entered on a list that will be evaluated by the Board and administration.  This list is an important piece of information that will be used, along with other data, to assist with budget decisions.  We will continue to provide budget updates throughout this year. - more -

Sam Jorgensen Wins Geography Bee

Sam Jorgensen, 8th grader at Riverside Middle School, won the National Geographic Bee at the school level on Friday, January 22, 2010. He bested a field of 30 contestants from 6th, 7th and 8th grade in a hard-fought competition, consisting of questions on U.S. cities, continents, world history, U.S. historical geography, and cultural geography.
Second place was secured by Richie Winkler, 8th grade, and Riley Bolitho, 7th grade, took third. The competition was very rigorous, and congratulations go out to all the competitors.


Sam now takes a written qualifying test, which goes to the National Geographic Society. If he scores high enough, he will compete at the state level. State finalists will compete in the National Geographic Bee in Washington DC.

Rifle Middle School students answer their call to duty

It began with a few letters.

As part of Rifle Middle School Fifth Grade teacher William Allen’s writing assignment, he asked his students to use their writing skills to pen letters to a handful of soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

World Record Cup Stacking Day
Students from several Garfield Re-2 schools took part in the World Sport Stacking Association's attempt to break the world record for sport stacking at multiple locations in one day.  Below are some photos from their cup stacking adventures.

Colorado has a reputation as an active, fit state. We boast the lowest adult obesity rates in the country. Yet the data tell a different story for our children. More than one in 10 Colorado high school students is overweight. Poor diet is one of the leading causes of obesity; inadequate physical activity is the other. -more-

Updated H1N1 information
As you may have heard, or seen in the media, the Garfield Re-2 family suffered a significant loss recently with the passing of a second grader at Wamsley Elementary. The loss of any student or staff member is tragic, especially someone so young. Our thoughts and our prayers are with her family in this time of need. - more -
Mock Bus Crisis aids in training county-wide


The scene of a devastating disaster in Rifle Saturday afternoon. There were two deaths reported, and about 20 children rushed to a nearby hospital. But wait--it was not real.

Reading Program Gives Students an Edge
The transition from elementary school to middle school in Garfield Re-2 became a little smoother this year for students with the addition of the Reading Edge reading program. - more -
Healthy habits prevent illness

As children return to school, spend less time outdoors and more time in confined spaces such as classrooms, the chances of airborne illness increases. The flu season is already upon us, and there are confirmed cases of flu within Garfield Re-2.

 

The Garfield Re-2 School District is focusing on prevention.  We are continuing to work with Garfield County Public Health Department in monitoring the flu situation including H1N1, but here are some tips that we hope you will find helpful in keeping your family healthy this year: - more
